Knight parity

Like last year at the beginning of autumn, Netschach has chosen a puzzle that purely numerically shows a similar balance of power between the two parties. At least in the strength of the cavalry this is the case, the number of knights is identical. However, already with White's first move this balance could be considerably upset, or strongly shifted in favor of the attacker. Is this the trick that makes a checkmate in 3 moves possible?
